Selina Mwao, Charles Omondi, and Ebenexer Akhonga, students from the School of Science,  participated in the 2024 Kenya National Worldskills Competitions at the Kenya School of TVET in Nairobi. The event which saw over 170 students from universities and technical training colleges compete in over 17 skill areas including Mobile Applications Development and IT Network Systems Administration where students from the University of Eldoret participated. Selina Mwao was the 1st runner-up position (Position 2) in the Mobile Applications Development category, while Charles Omondi was the 2nd runner-up in the same category. This gives our students the opportunity to advance to the regional competitions in 2025, subject to the criteria that will be established by the organizing committee.

Worldskills Competition is a global skills Olympic to show how important skills are in achieving economic growth and success. The objective is to inspire over 100 million youths across the world through practical simulations and problem-solving exercises. The aim of the Kenya National Worldksills Competitions is to develop skills locally to attract foreign investment, address the plan by the government to export labour, and build the capacity of youth by developing the skills they need to thrive in a dynamic global economy.

The 2024 Kenya National Worldskills Competitions is the second in Kenya after joining Worldskills International in 2020 as the 84th member, 11 of whom are African countries. The students who excelled in the first Kenya National Worldskills Competitions that took place in 2021 are currently proceeding to France for the global competitions. The National Worldskills Competitions served as a platform for the students from the University of Eldoret to showcase their skills and talents in technical fields, enhancing their confidence and professional competencies. The students were accompanied by the Head of Intellectual Property Management, Dr. Becky Aloo who was also part of the Worldskills Kenya Organizing Committee and Mr. John Slater from the Directorate of ICT who was appointed as a judge/expert by TVETA. The student’s achievement in such a prestigious competition reflects the effectiveness of the academic curricula at the University of Eldoret and its dedication to preparing students for real-world challenges. It further highlights the quality of our academic programs and the capability of our students to excel in competitive environments.
